Twitch or WhatsApp bot: what works and what does not

A Twitch bot is easy to host. For WhatsApp, unofficial libraries put the account at risk: here is the official route and its limits.

A Twitch bot connects to a channel’s chat and reacts to messages. It is hosted like a Discord or Telegram bot. A WhatsApp bot first raises a question of rules: the official route goes through the WhatsApp Business Cloud API, and the rest depends on WhatsApp’s terms of use.

  • A Twitch bot connects to the chat with a Twitch application and a dedicated account.
  • WhatsApp goes through the official Business Cloud API and an HTTPS webhook, not an unofficial library.
  • Unofficial WhatsApp libraries expose the account to suspension.

Twitch bot: what is possible

A Twitch bot connects to the chat with a dedicated account and an application created in the Twitch developer portal. It reads messages, answers commands and runs continuously, like other bots.

  • Create an application in the Twitch developer portal to get a client ID and a secret, without writing them in the code.
  • Common libraries handle the chat connection: TwitchIO in Python, tmi.js in Node.js.
  • No credential should be hard-coded: use environment variables, as for a Discord token.

WhatsApp: the official route

WhatsApp does not offer a ready-made bot. The official route is the WhatsApp Business Cloud API, provided by Meta: a business account, a number and a webhook that receives messages.

  • The webhook requires a reachable HTTPS address, which Meta calls to deliver messages.
  • A webhook needs a public port: on ACLClouds, it is assigned in the bot’s Startup tab.
  • Sending rules (message templates, reply windows) are set by Meta and can change: read the official documentation before designing the bot.

Unofficial WhatsApp: the risk

Unofficial libraries, such as whatsapp-web.js or Baileys, drive WhatsApp Web instead of the app. They do not respect WhatsApp’s terms of use, and the account can be restricted or banned.

  • The number used can be blocked overnight, along with its conversations.
  • A WhatsApp update can break the library without notice.
  • For customer service or professional activity, this choice puts the business at risk: prefer the official API.

What ACLClouds provides for a Twitch or WhatsApp bot

A Twitch bot or a bot connected to the official WhatsApp API is a Node.js or Python program that runs continuously. ACLClouds hosts it, with SFTP access per bot and the Node.js and Python images.

  • Free plan: 1 bot, 315 MB of RAM, 0.25 vCPU, 715 MB of storage.
  • SFTP access per bot on port 2222, to upload the code.
  • A public port is assigned in the Startup tab for a webhook. Without a port, the bot only makes outgoing connections.

Frequently asked questions

Can I host a Twitch bot for free?

Yes, within the free plan limits: 1 bot, 315 MB of RAM, 0.25 vCPU. Measure your bot’s consumption: a light chat bot usually stays within that limit.

Why not use whatsapp-web.js for a small bot?

Because the account stays exposed: a simple restriction can stop the service at any time. For lasting use, the official API is the only safe choice.

Is the official WhatsApp API paid?

Meta bills it according to conversations and message templates. Check Meta’s official pricing, which can change, before you start.
