Linux VPS with 16 GB RAM: what it is really for
Databases, Docker, n8n, a small local AI: what 16 GB of RAM can run on a Linux VPS, how to measure it, and when you need more.
A Linux VPS with 16 GB of RAM can run a database, several Docker containers, n8n and a small local AI model, as long as you share the memory between these services. The right habit is to measure what each service really uses, then keep a margin for the system and for traffic peaks.
- 16 GB of RAM can run a database, Docker and n8n, provided you measure consumption.
- free -h and docker stats show where the memory goes.
- Swap relieves RAM without replacing it: it slows the server down.
- The Linux Essentiel 16 GB plan is 9.99 € as of 7 November 2026.
What 16 GB of RAM allows
RAM holds the running programs and their data. Linux takes a small share, the rest serves your services. A PostgreSQL database, an n8n instance and a few containers can therefore share the same machine, as long as each one stays within its budget.
- Database: PostgreSQL or MySQL for a small application, with its own memory settings.
- Automation: n8n with its database, see self-hosting n8n on a VPS.
- Docker containers: each service has its share, to be limited in its Compose file.
Measure before adding a service
Connect over SSH and run a few commands during a real day of activity. They show the memory in use, the memory available and the share of each container.
- free -h: the available column shows the memory really free.
- docker stats: the usage of each container, live.
- If available memory drops below a few hundred MB, the system starts using swap and the server slows down.
What 16 GB does not cover
A large language model or a database of several tens of gigabytes often exceeds 16 GB. For local AI, the model size decides everything: read Ollama on a CPU VPS before you start.
- A model of 30 billion parameters or more generally needs more than 16 GB, even quantized.
- A busy game server, or several heavy applications at once: move to a plan with 32 GB or more, or split the services across two machines.
- Usage that keeps growing: a memory leak eventually saturates the machine, whatever its size.
Why choose ACLClouds for a 16 GB Linux VPS
The Linux Essentiel plan gives 16 GB of RAM, 4 vCPU and 80 GB of storage, at 9.99 € as of 7 November 2026, about 0.62 € per GB of RAM. The Performance plan, at 21.99 €, gives 48 GB, about 0.46 € per GB.
- KVM virtualization: each VPS is a complete system, with its own Linux kernel.
- Servers located in France.
- Control panel available in 7 languages.
- For Windows, the Essentiel 16 GB RDP plan is 14.99 € as of 7 November 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 16 GB VPS enough for n8n and PostgreSQL?
For a personal installation or a small team, often yes. Run docker stats for a week of real use before adding another service.
Do you need more RAM or more vCPU?
RAM limits how many services can run at the same time, vCPU limits simultaneous computing. If RAM stays low and the processor is saturated, it is vCPU that is missing.
Can swap replace RAM?
No. Swap keeps the machine alive when memory runs out, but it is much slower. It is a safety net, not a capacity plan.
