How much RAM does a VPS need? A guide by use
Website, WordPress, Minecraft, Discord bot, Docker or database: RAM benchmarks by use, how to measure them and the margin to keep.
For a simple website or bot, 2 to 4 GB of RAM is often enough. For a game server, Docker with several services or a database, you often need more. These figures are rough guides: the right amount comes from measuring your own usage over a few days.
- Measure RAM at peak usage before choosing the server size.
- A simple site often fits in 2 to 4 GB; Docker and databases need more.
- Keep about 20 to 30% of margin for the system and peaks.
- The Linux Mini plan gives 8 GB of RAM for 4.99 € as of 7 November 2026.
Measure what you already use
If your application already runs, measuring is more reliable than any table. Run free -h for overall memory, htop for the detail per process and docker stats for each container, at peak times.
- Record memory used at peak, not only at rest.
- Usage that keeps growing points to a leak: the problem is in the software, not in the server size.
- Watch swap: if it grows, RAM is short.
Guide values by use
These rough values apply to a standard installation, without mods or heavy traffic. Adjust them to what you measure.
- Static site or blog without a database: 2 GB is often enough.
- WordPress with its MySQL database: 4 GB to start, more with heavy plugins or traffic.
- Discord bot: often 1 to 2 GB, more with audio playback.
- Minecraft Java server: 2 to 4 GB for a small group in standard form, more with mods or many players.
- Docker with n8n and PostgreSQL: 8 to 16 GB depending on the number of services, see a 16 GB Linux VPS.
Keep a margin
Available RAM should never drop to zero: the system, the cache and peaks need room. Keep about 20 to 30% of margin above your peak usage. A server that uses swap slows down well before it is full.
- On a game server, the margin avoids stops during backups and world loading.
- Do not pay for capacity you will never use: measure first, then choose.
Why choose ACLClouds for your RAM
Linux plans come with a fixed amount of RAM, which keeps comparison simple. As of 7 November 2026, Mini gives 8 GB for 4.99 €, about 0.62 € per GB, and Pro gives 64 GB for 34.99 €, about 0.55 € per GB.
- Mini: 8 GB of RAM, 2 vCPU and 40 GB of storage, at 4.99 €.
- Essentiel: 16 GB of RAM, 4 vCPU and 80 GB of storage, at 9.99 €.
- Performance: 48 GB of RAM, 8 vCPU and 150 GB of storage, at 21.99 €.
- Pro: 64 GB of RAM, 12 vCPU and 250 GB of storage, at 34.99 €.
Frequently asked questions
What is a reasonable minimum for a Linux VPS?
For a website, a bot or a small application, 8 GB leaves a comfortable margin. ACLClouds Mini starts at 8 GB of RAM.
How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?
It depends on the number of players and mods. Start with 4 GB for a small group, then adjust based on real measurements.
Does more RAM make the server faster?
Not always. RAM avoids swap and stops caused by memory shortage; speed also depends on vCPU and storage.
