How do I update a game server installed with SteamCMD?
Warn the players, stop the server, back up the configuration and let SteamCMD update the official files.
Most SteamCMD server templates (eggs) check the files on every startup. Forcing an update while the server is writing to disk may corrupt files or interrupt a backup.
Step-by-step procedure
-
Warn and stop
Announce the shutdown, wait for the world to save, then use the Stop button.
-
Back up the data
Create a backup of the world and configuration folders before a major update.
-
Start the server once
Let SteamCMD download and validate the files. Do not interrupt the server while Update state lines are displayed.
-
Check the version
Check the version shown in the console and test a connection before reopening the server to players.
