Paper, Vanilla, Fabric or Forge: which to choose?
Choose server software based on plugins, mods and desired compatibility.
The server software determines which extensions are available. It is easier to choose the right family before importing a world.
Step-by-step procedure
-
Vanilla
Choose Vanilla for the Mojang experience without a server plugin. Client compatibility is the most direct.
-
Paper or Purpur
Choose Paper for Bukkit/Spigot plugins and good performance. Purpur adds more gameplay options.
-
Fabric
Choose Fabric for lightweight mods and a modern ecosystem. Players must install the required client mods.
-
Forge or NeoForge
Choose this family for heavy modpacks. Check the version Minecraft and Java imposed by the pack.
-
Bedrock
Choose Bedrock for mobile, console and Windows Bedrock clients. Java plugins are not directly compatible.
